What benefits can you expect from joining us and paying your annual subscription? For the time being, not very much at all. But to paraphrase JFK, don't ask what your country can do for you, ask what we can do for ourselves, because the old parties sure aren't going to do it for us, they'll just continue with the same-old same-old for as long as they can get away with it.
But we need to recruit members, and we need members to recruit new members. And new members to recruit yet even newer members.
Firstly because we need members to stand as YPP candidates at as many elections as possible - there are about 20,000 local councillors (parish, town, borough, county and assembly) and about a quarter of these are up for re-election each year. Standing at local elections is free, if you have the time and money to do leafletting and canvassing, so much the better, but the main thing is to get our name and emblem onto as many ballot papers as possible - just remember to get the signed form from our Nominating Officer to allow you to do so.
Secondly because we don't expect to receive a penny from big business, The City or from trade unions - and it would be worrying if we did. We're in the process of setting up a bank account, which takes time, and we'll start officially recruiting once it's opened. All subscriptions will be paid into this and rolled forward for funding election campaigns. The party's officers from time to time will be strictly unpaid and we will keep running costs to a bare minimum, i.e. a few hundred quid a year plus postage.
Simply putting up 650-odd candidates at a General Election costs £325,000 in deposits, with another £400,000 on top just for leaflet printing. There's a General Election every four or five years, so at a bare minimum we need 20,000 members paying £12 a year to finance this; and twice that many if we are going to run full campaigns at EU Parliament elections as well.
